About Issie

Driven by the belief that music encapsulates what it is to be human, passionate performer and educator Issie Brown “demonstrates both the technical prowess and individuality of expression that is the hallmark of the best performers” (read more here). Issie is a versatile musician and enjoys performing a broad repertoire, with a particular focus on diverse programming - highlighting the works of composers from marginalised groups and championing Australian music.

As an orchestral musician, Issie has performed with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Australian Youth Orchestra, and in the orchestra for The Nutcracker in Hamer Hall, Melbourne (2022).

Issie has extensive chamber music experience, especially with wind quintet Delma Winds. Delma Winds was invited to perform at the Queensland Ballet 2022 Season Launch, and at the Kenilworth Arts Festival (2019), as well as at Masterclasses with Diana Doherty and Musica Viva (2021), and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Wind Quintet (2019). Issie was also delighted to perform in several concerts with flute collective Fanciful Flutes, including 'Feathers and Flight' (2023), a concert she curated at Yandoit Cultural Centre.

As a soloist, Issie has performed on ABC Radio Canberra and 3MBS Fine Music Melbourne, including a recital live-to-air for the program Melbourne in Concert. She was also delighted to record Leah Blankendaal's salt in my eyes in my hair in my mouth for the album March of the Women 2024: a project from 2022 ABC Young Performer Awards winner, Eliza Shephard.

In 2016, Issie achieved her Associate of Music (AMusA, Australian Music Examinations Board), receiving the rare honour of a distinction. She was subsequently awarded the Leslie Barklamb Flute Award, which is offered to an AMusA flute candidate who  demonstrates “exceptional performance skills”. These skills have continued to be acknowledged,  including with 1st Prize in the Victorian Flute Guild’s Leslie Barkamb Scholarship Competition (2023), and 3rd Prize in 3MBS' The Talent (2023). Issie earned her Bachelor of Music in Performance (Flute) with Distinction (2021) from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith Univeristy, where her studies were guided by pre-eminent flautist, Virginia Taylor. She is currently studying her Master of Music in Performance at the Hochschule der Künste Bern (HKB), under the guidance of Professor Adam Walker: formerly Principal Flute of the London Symphony Orchestra, and widely recognised as one of today's greatest flautists.

Issie has extensive experience teaching students across a broad range of ages and abilities. Issie has been a valued flute tutor at Brindabella Christian College, Canberra (2025), beginner piano teacher at Majura Primary School and St Joseph's Primary School (2024-2025) and flute, piano and music theory teacher at Harmonie Music Centre, Brisbane (2019-2021). She has also taught several classes with the Australian Girls' Choir, Canberra (2024-2025).

In her spare time, Issie enjoys reading, handicrafts, and language learning (namely French, German and Italian).
